Sponsored by Women In Need, Inc.
Presented By: Juanita Sprenkle Jones, MHS, CJSOTS, NCCE
Juanita Sprenkle Jones is the Program Coordinator for SpiriTrust Lutheran Domestic Abuse Solutions in York, Pennsylvania and has over twenty years of experience working with men who batter and control their intimate partner. This two-day presentation will take a look at predicting lethality in domestic violence relationships and discussing characteristics that are red flags for domestic violence and for recidivism. This presentation will also identify common characteristics of those who are abusive in their attempts to control a partner and who might escalate the control tactics to physical violence. Tools to predict risk and lethality will be examined as well as additional tools for safety planning. In addition, this presentation will take a look at understanding how gender affects the use of force in relationships. Become familiar with the interactive connection between entitlement and escalated risk of violence or lethality in intimate partner relationships and custody disputes.

The Batterer as a Parent and the Change Process for Abusive Men
Sponsored by Women In Need, Inc.
**Sorry for the inconvenience, but due to popularity of this training, we have reached capacity and had to close registration early. Please stay tuned for any and all upcoming events. Thank you!**
This two-day presentation will take a look at “The Batterer As Parent.” We will establish the profile of men who abuse women, describe the power dynamics and the psychologically poisoned atmosphere that an abuser creates for children in the home. We will examine the impact the batterer has on the parenting of the abused women, and look at “The change Process for Abusive Men.” We will also look at the elements of change, including consequences, education, confrontation, and accountability. A checklist will be reviewed for assessing whether an abuser has made meaningful progress in overcoming his abuse issues, with some explanation of how to detect false claims of change. We will also discuss specific roles professionals can play in contributing to change and accountability for abusers.

Strangulation has been identified as one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence and sexual assault. Unconsciousness may occur within seconds and death within minutes. When domestic violence perpetrators choke (strangle) their victims, not only is this felonious assault, but it may be an attempted homicide. This training will focus on the background of strangulation investigations. We will cover topics such as the mechanism of injury, evidence documentation, working with victims, and scene investigation.

This 6-hour training will address the numerous weapons offenders use to ensure their success, exposing the ways they manipulate their victims and the community, means they use to get the victim to respond in a way that protects the offender, and the specific weapons they use to camouflage and confuse those investigating and prosecuting sexual offenses. This will include (mis)use of the relationship with the victim, use of alcohol to facilitate rape, institutional abuse and use of status by the offender, and manipulation of victim response to assault (production of “counterintuitive” behavior).
